ART, PERFORMANCE (UN-CATEGORISED).
Haydenshapes is a performance surfboard, wetsuit and contemporary ready-to-wear brand founded in 1997 by Hayden Cox in Sydney, Australia.
Haydenshapes is a performance surfboards, wetsuit, and contemporary fashion brand founded by Hayden Cox and based in Sydney, Australia and Los Angeles, California. The Haydenshapes brand DNA at its core connects to the fundamental product in which the industry and lifestyle of surfing exist; the surfboard. A signature, our patented parabolic carbon fiber frame surfboard construction ‘FutureFlex’ - a significant design contribution to surfboards globally having both influenced and pave way for modern innovation across the category.
Known for a contemporary and high-end approach to design and construction, nontypical to our peers, the Haydenshapes brand is synonymous for multi faceted design led collaboration inspired by but not limited to surfboards. This has included large-scale cast resin architecture collaborations including the award-winning ‘Gallery Shop’ resin installation with Akin Atelier for The Art Gallery of NSW’s SANAA designed Sydney Modern wing in 2022. Other innovative design projects include resin furniture, continued collaboration with long-time brand muse Craig Anderson along with art projects with Daniel Arsham, KITH, HS Rubber by Dion Lee, The Woolmark Company, and Alexander Wang among others.
Our future forward is sustainability. Our method is materiality, waste reduction, and exploring ways to re-engineer greener methods for creating.

Tell us about the history of your brand. How did you start it?
I started Haydenshapes in 1997 when I was 15 years old. I hand shaped my first board on work experience at a glassing factory in Mona Vale. I created the logo HS and kept building the brand board by board until I opened my first factory when I was 22 years old.
Tell us the concept and values of your brand.
I have always enjoyed experimentation and innovating leading with materials and how you can use them to create different feelings and experiences. I like to blend this performance and innovate with art. This combination opens up the projects and ideas to be very interesting and unique with a lot of challenges.
What do you like about where the brand is based in? Tell us about the community.
I really enjoy the community all around the world that engages with our brand. I find that everyone relates to the brand in many different ways depending on what their interest are and the boards or projects we are working on. Within everything we do, it is pinned by performance that is genuine and proven by the experience of the rider. It is fun to release new projects and go on this journey with our community.
Which surf spot do you recommend in your community?
I love surfing at home and all around the world on my travels. I'd recommend traveling and experiencing the local cultures around the world.
When and how did you start shaping surfboards?
I started in 1997 at 15 years old and have been self-taught since then. I opened my own factory at 22 and have been learning and building boards start to finish since then.
What kind of surfboards do you shape? Please tell us the uniqueness of your surfboards.
I like to blend technology with performance, but not always conventional performance surfboards. I feel there are many different ways a surfer can approach a wave, and with this comes the ability to ride shapes and curves that will suit those waves or the style of the surfer. Our boards do not always follow conventional curves and designs, but will pair different ideas to create boards that are high performance but also fun and easy to ride in a lot of conditions.
Which surfboard model represents your brand? When and how did you shape it?
The Hypto Krypto FutureFlex model is our most ridden and known shape. I shaped the first one for myself in 2007 and also used my patented carbon fiber rail design - FutureFlex - on the shape too. It is a very unique shape that blends performance with a cruisy, fast, and easy board that can surf anything from 1-10ft.
Which new surfboard model are you most excited with recently?
The Holy Hypto has been my latest design that I have been loving riding lately. Wheather you are in Indonesia or at a wave pool, it is a super fun, versatile and high performance shape that is forgiving. I find my rhythm on this board really easily which I love.
Other than surfboards, what kind of products do you create? (Wetsuits, Clothing, etc.)
We launched our HS-Rubber - wetsuit - category about a year ago and we use Yamamoto Limestone-based neoprene for its lightweight, highly flexible, and warm properties. It is also non-petroleum-based neoprene so it is more sustainable as a material. We also have our apparel side of the brand too, which is a fun category blending some great materials like our Woolmark Australian Merino Wool fabrics with contemporary silhouettes and art direction.
Tell us about your brand ambassadors and riders. Please introduce them to our viewers.
Our Haydenshapes team is something I am very proud of. I have shaped boards for some of these riders like Craig Anderson for 20 years. It is like a family. Dion Agius, Dylan Graves, Frankie Harrer, Jake Kelley, Micky Clarke, Shama Beckford, Cliff Kapono.
Tell us about your passion for video production. (story, filmer, surfer, design, etc.)
I have always personally loved to film and take photos. I shot all my first photos for print ads of the HS team and worked on all the film edits. I really like seeing the boards and surfers come to life through a film and the creativity it takes to put it all together. I really appreciate our team riders and how much time and effort they put into making their films and the curation of their content. They are all so different and I feel their films speak to each of their own personalities.
Which one video would you highlight in this playlist and why? (tell us the video title)
"Forward. To Past." feat. Craig Anderson and Dion Agius is one of my favourite films which was edited by Dion Agius. I like the curation of music and the different tempos and styles of filming in the edit. It makes me want to go on a surf trip and have a lot of fun. Second to that "These Violent Delights" was a film shot on a team trip to Indonesia and one of our biggest projects to date. Once again Dion Agius edited this film as he was injured on the trip, he was heavily involved in the art direction and ideas in the film.
What’s next for your brand? (Events, news, collaboration, etc.)
We are working on a film of the team to release in 2025. We have been shooting for about 3 years now and have a few more trips to go. I have some super interesting people working on it and can't wait to put it out there.
Do you have any messages for customers?
Thank you for your support! I love seeing the boards being ridden all around the world and hearing about your stories and experiences. It's fun working with you to get the best boards to ride.
